Barreiro is a Portuguese city in the district of Setúbal, with 63,363 inhabitants.
It is the seat of the municipality of Barreiro with an area of 36.39 km² and 78 764 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes (Alto do Seixalinho, Santo André and Verderena; Barreiro and Lavradio; Palhais and Coina; Santo António da Charneca.
The municipality is bordered on the east by the municipality of Moita, on the southeast by Palmela, on the south by Setúbal and Sesimbra, on the west by Seixal and on the north by the Tagus River and its estuary. On the other side is the city of Lisbon.
Barreiro, a former industrial city and now a dormitory in Lisbon, has a remarkable potential for development. There are grandiose projects to transform that region located on the Tagus River estuary into a superior housing site.

It should be noted that the city of Barreiro has a strategic position 6 km from the center of Lisbon. Bathed by the Tagus River and supported by an important road, rail and river terminal, it is 20 km away by land from the city of Lisbon (via Ponte 25 de Abril — 35 km by Ponte Vasco da Gama) and around 35 km from Setúbal, district capital (via the A2).
